The Chicago River is a system of rivers and canals with a combined length of 156 miles that runs through the city of Chicago, including its center.Throughout the city and its nearby suburbs, forty-five movable bridges span the river, many of them well-known and quite picturesque. Several were also considered engineering marvels of their time, like the one at Michigan Avenue, one of the first fixed trunnion bascule bridges in the country, built in 1920.

The source of the Main Stem of the Chicago River is Lake Michigan. Water enters the river through sluice gates at the Chicago River Controlling Works with a small additional flow provided by the passage of boats between the river and Lake Michigan through the Chicago Harbor Lock. The surface level of the river is maintained at 0.5 to 2 feet (0.15 to 0.61 m) below the Chicago City Datum (579.48 feet [176.63 m] above mean sea level) except for when there is excessive storm run-off into the river or when the level of the lake is more than 2 feet below the Chicago City Datum.

The Chicago River remains a very popular target for freshwater recreational fishing. In 2006, the Chicago Park District started the annual "Mayor Daleys Chicago River Fishing Festival", which has increased in popularity with each year.
