St. Petersburg's most popular visitor attraction, and one of the world's largest and most prestigious museums, the Hermitage is a must-see for all first-time travellers to the city. The State Hermitage is a museum of art and culture in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The largest it was founded in 1764 when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. The museum celebrates the anniversary of its founding each year on 7 December, Saint Catherine's Day.It has been open to the public since 1852.The museum is also exceptionally rich in Impressionist, post-Impressionist and modernist paintings including many works by Monet, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Bonnard and Matisse. The art in the Hermitage represents, for the most part, the former imperial collection of the tsars, which began some 300 years ago when Peter the Great began acquiring pictures and artefacts.Of all the world’s major museums, the Hermitage is probably the most confusing to find your way around at first, with about 400 rooms spread over three floors of five interlinked buildings.
HERMITAGE THEATER
The last building along the Neva River Embankment, the Hermitage Theater was built in 1787 by the architect Quarenghi. Catherine the Great wanted to have an in-house theater for the exclusive enjoyment of herself and her close friends. There is no formal entrance to the theater from the street and the entry foyer connects the Hermitage Theater to the Old Hermitage spanning the waters of the Winter Canal. The theater is laid out as a Roman amphitheater with perfect visibility and superb acoustics from every seat.
