Lake Onega is a lake in the north-west European part of Russia, located on the territory of Republic of Karelia, Leningrad Oblast and Vologda Oblast. The second largest lake in Europe, it is c.150 mi (240 km) long with a maximum width of c.60 mi (100 km) and a maximum depth of c.360 ft (110 m). It belongs to the basin of the Baltic Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and is the second largest lake in Europe after Lake Ladoga. The lake is fed by about 50 rivers and is drained by the Svir River. There are about 1,650 islands on the lake. They include Kizhi, which hosts a historical complex of 89 orthodox wooden churches and other wooden constructions of 15th–20th centuries. The complex includes a UNESCO World Heritage site Kizhi Pogost. Eastern shores of the lake contain about 1200 petroglyphs (rock engravings) dated to 4th–2nd millennia BC. The major cities on the lake are Petrozavodsk, Kondopoga and Medvezhyegorsk.
The colour of Onega’s water is dark yellowish brown in the open part and grayish brown along the shores. The lake contains more than 40 species of fish, including ryapushka (a small member of the salmon family), smelt, burbot (a freshwater variant of the cod), bream, pike, perch, roach, and salmon. The fish are of considerable economic value.

Climate
The ecoregion falls with the humid contintental (Dfb) and subarctic (Dfc) climate zones according to the Köppen classification (Peel et al. 2007).

Freshwater habitats
Both lakes (Ladoga and Onega lakes) contain deep waters that remain cold (1 to 4°C) year-round, yet the coastal waters heat relatively quickly during spring. A distinct thermal bar between warm and cold water often separates water masses by roughly 20°C. Despite unrelentingly cold temperatures in the lake’s central regions, cold-loving whitefishes and paliya still inhabit the areas during most of the year.
