Waipi`o Valley, the famous "Valley of the Kings", and the surrounding 23 miles of bluffs, waterfalls, black sand beaches and winding rivers, offer unlimited opportunities for hiking, picnicking or just relaxing in the valley.
This location is truly an immersion in rural "old Hawaii", while only 15 minutes from the lovely town of Honokaa, with its shops and restaurants; and less than an hours drive from the towns of Waimea and Hilo, offering an even greater selection of fine shopping, dining and entertainment opportunities.

The scenic Waipio overlook is at the northern end of the Hamakua Heritage Corridor, the section of highway that runs along the Hamakua coast from Hilo to Waipio. To reach the Waipio overlook, drive west about twenty minutes from the community of Honokaa on the north side of the Big Island.
Honokaa is about 20 minutes east of Waimea, just off of Highway 19.

Maui Ocean Center

Maui
calendarJun 12 2017
Use the Maui Ocean Center to both entertain and educate kids and adults with a variety of exhibits and live ocean creatures.

This midsize aquarium showcases Hawaii’s dazzling marine life, including many species found nowhere else.
The floor plan takes you on an ocean journey, beginning with nearshore reefs teeming with colorful tropical fish and ending with deep-ocean sealife.
The grand finale is a 54ft clear acrylic tunnel that leads you through a large tank as sharks and rays glide by.
Local ordinance prevents exhibition of live cetaceans, so there’s no dolphin show.

The Maui Ocean Center contains several types of exhibits, including a series of indoor salt water aquariums that introduced us to the varied sea life in the ocean surrounding the Hawaiian islands - Turtle Lagoon, the Tide Pool, Hammerhead Harbor, the Marine Mammal Discovery Center, the Hawaiians and the Sea Exhibit, the Open Ocean tunnel, the Surge Zone, and the Living Reef.

The Maui Ocean Center humpback whale exhibit provides interesting background information on the whales that visit the shallow leeward ocean west of Maui each winter to calve and mate.

Mauna Kea

Mauna
calendarJun 12 2017
Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the Hawaiian Chain.
Mauna Kea, is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii.
It is the second largest in subaerial surface area of the five shield volcanoes that comprise the island of Hawaii.
Maunakea is one of the only places in the world where you can drive from sea level to 14,000 feet in about 2 hours, so altitude sickness is a high possibility.
At 14,000 feet, there is 40% less oxygen than at sea level, so visitors should acclimatize to the altitude before proceeding further up the mountain.
Anyone in poor health should consult their physician before planning a visit to Maunakea.
Snow and skiing are not uncommon during the winter months.
A rough road, suitable for 4 wheel drive vehicles, provides access to the summit, which is also home to the Mauna Kea Observatory.
Mauna Kea's composition is primarinly tholeiitic basalt, capped by alkalic lavas of hawaiite to benmoreite compositions.
Remnants of glacial terrane from the last global ice age (about 20,000 years ago) can be seen on Mauna Kea's summit.

Hana Road

Hana
calendarJun 12 2017
More beautiful than the Road to Hana on Maui.
It’s a curvy coastal road with views of cliffs, beaches, waterfalls, and miles and miles of rainforest.
It’s a well paved road, but you do need to keep your wits about you when you drive it because of the many sharp curves and one-lane bridges.
There are wilder roads, steeper roads, and more dangerous roads, but in all of Hawaii, no road is more celebrated than this one.

The outside world discovered the little village of Hana in 1926, when the narrow coastal road, carved by pickax-wielding convicts, opened.
The mud-and-gravel road, often subject to landslides and washouts, was paved in 1962, when tourist traffic began to increase; now more than 1,000 cars traverse the road each day, according to storekeeper Harry Hasegawa.
That equals about 500,000 people a year, which is way too many.
Go at the wrong time, and you'll be stuck in a bumper-to-bumper rental-car parade -- peak traffic hours are midmorning and midafternoon year-round, especially on weekends.
This trip is worthwhile both for the stunning drive and to see the town itself.

This is the last town on the Hana Highway while heading towards Hana.
It's often called the "windsurfing capital of the world!"

Pearl Harbor And USS Arizona Memorial

Pearl
calendarJun 12 2017
There is a reason the USS Arizona Memorial is the number one visitor destination in Hawaii.
Millions of people from all over the world come to this majestic setting to see for themselves where World War II began for the United States on December 7, 1941.

Located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 3,000 miles from the West Coast of America and 4,000 miles from Japan, Pearl Harbor serves as a central gathering place for the WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument, which consists of 9 historic locations in 3 of the westernmost United States - California, Alaska, and Hawaii.
Of these, five are located within Pearl Harbor itself: the USS Arizona Memorial, the USS Oklahoma Memorial, the USS Utah Memorial, and parts of Ford Island and Battleship Row.

Contrary to popular belief, the USS Arizona is no longer in commission.
As a special tribute to the ship and her lost crew, the United States flag flies from the flagpole, which is attached to the severed mainmast of the sunken battleship.
The USS Arizona Memorial has come to commemorate all military personnel killed in the Pearl Harbor attack.

The USS Arizona Memorial is free.
There is no entrance fee or activity fee.
Free tickets for the program are issued on a first come, first-served basis at the front desk in the visitor center.
