Hawaii
calendarJun 12 2017
There are five active volcanoes in Hawaii. They are:

1.Loihi
2.Kilauea
3.Mauna Loa
4.Hualalai
5.Haleakala

Loihi seamount, the youngest volcano of the Hawaiian chain, lies about 35 km off the SE coast of the island of Hawaii.
Loihi (which is the Hawaiian word for "long") has an elongated morphology dominated by two curving rift zones extending north and south of the summit.
The summit region contains a caldera about 3 x 4 km wide and is dotted with numerous lava cones, the highest of which is about 975 m below the sea surface.
The summit platform includes two well-defined pit craters, sediment-free glassy lava, and low-temperature hydrothermal venting.

Earthquakes are frequently measured at the volcano.

Kilauea

Kilauea

Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has a circumference of 8 mi (13 km) and is surrounded by a wall of volcanic rock 200 to 500 ft (61—152 m) high.
Kilauea is a currently active shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands, and the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawai?i.
(ke´läwa´) is a shield volcano, located in a crater 3,646 ft (1,111 m) deep.
Kilauea can be found on the Big Island of Hawaii, on the southeastern slope of Mauna Loa, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Kilauea is also the youngest volcano in Hawaii.
Hawaii, nicknamed BIG ISLAND because of it's 8 major volcanoes, is currently 4038 square miles (approx. 6 500 square km ) and grows around 42 acres every year thanks to all of mount Kilauea's eruptions.
The long-lasting eruption has destroyed more than 200 structures, including the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park visitor center, the Royal Gardens subdivision and many homes and buildings in the town of Kalapana.
For the last few years, lava from Pu`O O`O crater mostly streamed south toward the ocean.
But on June 27, 2014, flow erupted from a vent on the northeast flank of the crater.
The latest eruption of Kilauea volcano was observed in January, 2011 in which 3.5 cubic km lava was produced which damaged 213 structures.
At present, Kilauea volcano has become a famous and one of the most visited tourism places, but the trend of visiting this place was started on 1940.

The biggest mountain in the world, Mauna Loa, is a shield volcano with gently sloping sides.
Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on Earth with an estimated volume of 9,600 cubic miles (40,000 cubic kilometers).
It makes half of the area of the Island of Hawaii.
Mauna Loa began to form nearly a million years ago.
Since 1843, Mauna Loa has erupted 33 times, most recently in 1984.
Mauna Loa is in the shield-building stage and is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth, erupting 15 times since 1900.
At 60 miles long and 30 miles wide, Mauna Loa, the name of which fittingly means "Long Mountain" in Hawaiian, takes up about half of the Big Island.
Its mass also amounts to 85% of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined.

Hualalai, dormant volcano (8,271 feet [2,521 metres]), northwestern Hawaii island,
Hawaii, U.S. It emerged from the ocean some 300,000 years ago and is one of five volcanoes that form the island.
Its dome, 24 miles (39 km) long and 20 miles (32 km) wide, covers an area of 290 square miles (751 square km).
Hualalai is studded with cinder and spatter cones.
Its lava streams are interspersed with those of nearby Mauna Loa on the southern and eastern slopes.
Hualalai erupted several times in the late 18th century and was last active in 1800–01.
1929 earthquake swarm
A seismic swarm occurred in 1929 under Hualalai volcano.
There were several thousand earthquakes, some of which were felt as far as Honolulu.
It is not known but likely that the swarm was caused by magma movements under the volcano.

Haleakala, or the East Maui Volcano, is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui
The western 25% of the island is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also referred to as the West Maui Mountains.
Haleakala Crater is the most popular attraction in Upcountry Maui.
Stunning sunrises, panoramic out-of-this-world landscapes, birds-eye views of the Maui central valley, and flora and fauna that exist nowhere else in the world.
Haleakala National Park covers the summit area of the larger of the two volcanic mountains that make up Maui.
The National Park’s boundary has fingers that extend down the Hana side of the mountain, all the way to the ocean.
