Yellowstone Lake is the largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park.Yellowstone Lake is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 ft (2,100 m) in North America. How a Pacific Ocean fish was trapped in a lake that drains to the Atlantic puzzled experts for years. Scientists now believe that Yellowstone Lake once drained to the Pacific Ocean via Outlet Canyon and the Snake River, and that fish swam across the Continental Divide at Two Ocean Pass. Lake trout, an illegally introduced, exotic species, is now found in Yellowstone Lake and threatens the existence of the native cutthroat trout.

The lake currently drains north from its only outlet, the Yellowstone River, at Fishing Bridge. The elevation of the lake's north end does not drop substantially until LeHardy Rapids, so many consider those rapids to be the actual northern boundary of the lake.

Yellowstone Lake and its environs are a haven for aquatic birds, including Canada geese, several species of ducks, sandhill cranes, common loons, American white pelicans, and the rare trumpeter swan. The lake is also prized for trout fishing, although the native cutthroat trout are now endangered by introduced predators, notably lake trout. As a result, anglers must observe a catch-and-release policy for native species, and fishing is prohibited from the popular Fishing Bridge at the north end of the lake.

Weird Facts
South Creek Dome has been falling, causing the lake to slope southward, which in turn has caused sandy beaches to appear at the north side of the lake and has flooded areas at the south side. Mary Bay is the hottest spot on the lake, where a temperature of 252 degrees Fahrenheit has been recorded. Scientists have found some of these hot areas are similar to the Pacific Ocean's hydrothermal vents, located at the mid-ocean ridge.

Nearby Attractions
Hayden Valley, which was once filled by the lake, is just six miles north of Fishing Bridge Junction; Pelican Valley is three miles east of Fishing Bridge. These two areas are the best places to view grizzly bears, bison and elk. Natural Bridge is a one-mile walk from Bridge Bay Campground; the top of the bridge stands 51 feet above the creek.

A more recent change to Yellowstone’s geography is the area covered by large fire scars— cleared areas burned during the vast 1988 forest fires. The scars are still highly visible 17 years later because the light-colored cleared regions contrast with the surrounding forest.
